“This is the Table of Allah for the one who has searched for the real food to know his heart and to know his spirit. If he is ready, he can open the door and cross the threshold into the Heart of God. He can sit at the Table and find the real food of love and peace and mercy through the deep knowing. This Table is for all of my beloveds of all backgrounds... This chance is a jewel but it is not like the jewel that you have known before. He says, “Come, I am waiting to show you My light. I am the only answer for you. In reality there is nothing else, only Me. This is your time—don’t wait. The time is like a sword. If you do not know how to use it, it will hurt you. Use it to create and not to destroy... After this, you will carry this path, and in this path, there is no separation, no he or she, no male or female—only God.” p. 1~Sidi Shaykh Muhammad Sa’id al-Jamal ar-Rifa’i ash-Shadhdhuli

This book describes the lives and sayings of the Awliya and those blessed beings who lived in the time following the death of the Prophet Muhammad (‎ﷺ), whose lives were examples of the love of Allah made manifest in this world.

“Each one walked in a different way…They had many practices and exercises through with they could reach the Circle of Allah.”
–Sidi Shaykh Muhammad Sa’id al-Jamal ar-Rifa’i ash-Shadhdhuli

As he states in the book, the times in which those people of the Family of Allah lived was exactly like this time. Which gives us the beautiful opportunity to tap into the truly mystical, yet practical, ways that these awliya lived and apply them today!

These stories and teachings expand to connect us all with our spiritual lineage, our true family, inshallah, through the many lines, many paths, of these Prophets and Messengers.

Join us at the Table of Allah, where the real food of love, peace, and mercy awaits!

This class series hopes to explore the lives of these deep beloveds, through experientials, interactive classes, and bonus classes to meet, reflect, and discuss the teachings.

Through the many lines and stories in this book, you can experience, inshallah:

  • Hear the call, as Sidi says, for all people to come and to sit around the Table and be in the World of the Unity
  • Tastes of the subtle lights and high stations the Awliya’ carry, inshaallah
  • Their unique understanding and way through life in the knowledge that our Beloved God never leaves you for a moment
  • Connection to practical ways to navigate strong times in your own way
  • How to hold and care for your self (nafs) in a way that does not let them overtake you
  • The varieties, yet with no separation, between each of these spiritual lines that lead back to Allah
  • Understanding of how to carry this path where there is no separation, no he or she, no male or female–only God
“For when I speak about your Truth, I mean your Light which is from the Light of Allah. This is the Way of the Hidden. In it there is no separation between any person or thing, for there is no man and no woman, and there are no numbers, for there is only Allah…but through this Way, God wants you to be He now!
This is our Way.”
–Sidi Shaykh Muhammad Sa’id al-Jamal ar-Rifa’i ash-Shadhdhuli

Week One: April 26 @ 7-8:30 pm ET

Abu Yazid al-Bistami (رضي الله عنه)

    Salih Kent

Abu Yazid Tayfur ibn ‘Isa Surushan, also called Abu Yazid al-Bistami, is known as the founder of the ecstatic school of Sufism.

Abu Yazid al-Bistami said, “I saw the deep love in the appearance of divinity sitting on His throne surrounded by worshippers.”

Sidi Muhammad al Jamal teaches, “There is benefit only by coming to Allah with a sound heart… Soundness here means lack of deviation that would impede the reception of the divine overflowing.”

The Prophet, peace and blessings upon him, used to pray, “O He Who makes hearts fluctuate, fix my heart in Thy religion.”

The fruit of the heart is the result of divine overflowing, which becomes the tree of the spirit of the heart, and the fruit of the spirit is His spirit. Allah describes this when He says, “He has written faith in their hearts and strengthened them with a spirit from Himself.”

This is the primordial faith, given when He said, “Am I not your Lord?” He wrote this with the pen when they confirmed His Lordship, when they said, “Yes,” and He supported them with a spirit from Him. This is the fruit of the acquired tree through faith. – The Path to Allah Most High, pg. 238-239

Selections from chapter three, The Children of the Truth, pp. 98-122.
Additional Resource: The Path to Allah, pg. 74, 104, 238.

Week Two: May 3 @ 7-8:30 pm ET

Abu al-Qasim al-Junayd (رضي الله عنه)

    Amany Shalaby, MA

Abu al-Qasim al-Junayd (رضي الله عنه) said, “There is nothing in existence except Allah.”
-Path to Allah, Most High, pg. 222

Al-Junayd was only seven years old when his uncle, Sari as-Saqati took him on the Pilgrimage. There, in the Mosque of the Ka’bah, four hundred Shaykhs were discussing the question of Gratitude, each one giving his own opinion.

After a while, Sari turned to al-Junayd and said, “You say something.”

“Gratitude,” said Junayd, “means that you should not disobey Allah by means of the favor which He has bestowed on you, nor make His favor a source of disobedience.”

“Well said, O consolation of true believers,” cried the Shaykhs who were unanimous that there could not be a better answer.

Sari said, “It will soon come about that your special Gift from Allah will be your tongue.” Junayd wept when he heard his uncle say this. Sari then asked him, “Where did you learn this?” Junayd replied, “From sitting with you.”

“Know that the first condition for loving God is to know Him, and that the basis of knowing Allah is the knowing of His Oneness. His Oneness means to believe in Him. From believing in Him flows a certainty, which, in turn, leads to a knowing of Him. This knowing implies obedience to His Orders. Obedience leads to the ascent towards him, and finally to reaching Him.”
-Al-Junayd, The Children of the Truth, pp. 124 & 136

Sections from chapter four, The Children of the Truth, pp. 123-154.
    Additional resource: The Path To Allah, Most High, pp. 18, 21, 39, 216, 222, 257, 262, 108

Week Three: May 10 @ 7-8:30 pm ET

Abu ‘l-Husayn an-Nuri (رضي الله عنه)

    Murshid Wadude Laird, MD

An-Nuri had a big, deep and very subtle heart full of the Love of Allah, and was regarded as one of the ecstatics, together with Shibli and al-Hallaj, around al-Junayd.

He wrote many poems about the Love and about the states of the lover with the Beloved, which tell us about the quality of his heart, and the earth from which he came.

The name Nuri, they said, was given to him because whenever he spoke, even a dark room would seem illuminated because his words came with deep sincerity and faith from the truth in his heart.

Nuri said, “One moment of this world is better than a thousand years of the next world, because this world is the place of service and the next world is the place of proximity which can only be won through service.” -The Children of the Truth, pg. 155

Selections from chapter five, The Children of the Truth, pp. 155-169.

Week Four: May 17 @ 7-8:30 pm ET

Husayn ibn Mansur al-Hallaj (رضي الله عنه)

    Rahima Schmall, PhD, RN

He became a student of Al-Junayd. Al-Junayd’s way was that of perfect sobriety, in which the Secret of God’s Love had to be deeply contained, and only revealed to whoever could be trusted to guard It. In accepting al-Hallaj as his student, he knew that he was committing himself to a difficult responsibility. But he also knew that Allah, the All-Mighty, the All-Wise, had created al-Hallaj’s spirit just as He had created his own spirit and that whatever Allah Ordered and Willed must come to pass.

In al-Hallaj’s case, the Secret of the Love seized and intoxicated his entire being. His longing and yearning for Allah was such that only in his total destruction by Him could he find the Union which was the sole purpose and goal of his life. This was the Beauty (al-jamal) and the Majesty (al-Jalal) of his bondsmanship to Allah, and like a great river flowing from its source to the ocean, nothing could hinder or stop its course. -The Children of the Truth, pg. 171

Oh, Allah, Show us the truth as truth and give us the courage and strength to follow it and show us falsehood as falsehood and give us the courage & strength to rid ourselves of it. -prayer of beloved Amany Shalaby, MA

Selections from chapter six, The Children of the Truth, pp. 170- 200.

Week Five: May 24 @ 7-8:30 pm ET

Abu Bakr ibn Jahdar ash-Shibli (رضي الله عنه)

    Hamid Werder, MSW

It is said that when Shibli asked Allah, the All-Mighty, about the meaning of al-Hallah’s death, may Allah be pleased with him: “The best remembering is to forget the remembering in seeing.”

It is said that when Shibli asked Allah, the All-Mighty, about the meaning of al-Hallah’s death, that the hadith al-qudsi: whom My Love kills, I shall be the blood-money for him, came as the answer into his heart. For Allah, the Mighty, the Supreme, said, “Count not those slain in Allah’s Way dead, but rather living with their Lord, by Him provided.” (3:163).

Shibli said, “Pass beyond a thousand years of the past and a thousand years of the future, and do not be deceived by imaginings.” -The Children of the Truth, pp. 205-208

Selections from chapter seven, The Children of the Truth, pp. 201-216.
Additional Resource: Path to Allah, Most High, pg. 91, 104, 221

Week Six: May 31 @ 7-8:30 pm ET

Master Muhyi-id-din ‘Abdu ‘l-Qadir al-Jilani (رضي الله عنه) was the Qutb and Ghawth of his time.

Aisha McGuffey BS, MDiv, LMP, NCBTMB

‘Abdul ‘l-Qadir’s spiritual Line of inheritance derived from as-Shibli, al-Junayd, al-Bistami, Sari as-Saqati, and finally back to ‘Ali ibn Abu Talib (رضي الله عنه).

‘Abdu ‘l-Qadir was eighteen years old when he arrived in Baghdad. It is said that when he reached the gates of the city, al-Khidr appeared to him and prevented him from entering, saying that Allah, the All-Mighty had ordered that he should not enter Baghdad for seven years. Al-Khadir led him to a ruined castle where he stayed.

‘Abdu ‘l-Qadir was described as being gentle of nature, with a very soft heart and a smiling face. He was sensitive and had very courteous manners. He was aristocratic in character and generous in giving, both of material things and of his deep spiritual knowledge and advice. He loved people, but especially the believers and the beloveds who served and worshiped the One in Whom they believed.

It was known that Jews and Christians alike became Muslims through him, and Caliphs and Ministers were amongst his followers.

This is but a drop from the Ocean of the existence of the beloved slave of Allah, ‘Abdu ‘l-Qadir al-Jilani, may Allah have mercy upon him. There are no words to tell of his true Life in Allah and with Him. But he was a great Light for those who knew him, and a blessing for those who sat in his presence, and thanks be to Allah, the Mighty, the Supreme, for what He creates. -The Children of the Truth, pp. 223-224

Selections from chapter eight, The Children of the Truth, pp. 217-241.

Week Seven: June 7 @ 7-8:30 pm ET

Shu’ayb ibn Husayn al-Ansari Andalusi, known as Abu Madyan Ghawth
    (رضي الله عنه)

    Mahabbah Kimberly Young, MD, M.Div.

The Shaykh of the West and the spiritual ancestor of Abu al-Hasan ash-Shadhdhuli.

Among his teacher was Shaykh al-Hasan ibn Harzahim, of whom he said “when he gave a teaching etched itself deeply into my heart … when I told him of this one day, he answered me by saying, “since what flows out from my heart is the Truth, do not fail to profit by it.” -Children of the Truth, pp. 248-268.

When he was asked Are you not affected by all these people touching you for blessing (barakah)? He answered Is the black stone affected by the kissing of all the people? Does the black stone move? They answered, No. He said I am that black stone. -The Path to Allah, Most High, pg.105.

Selections from chapter ten, the Children of the Truth, pp. 248-268.

Week Eight: June 21 at 6:30pm-8pm ET

*NOTE TIME CHANGE DUE TO FULL MOON DHIKR

    Ahmad ar-Rifa’i (رضي الله عنه)

    Dr. Jamila Carolyn Dixon

One of the Arab Sufis, he was full of the Spirit, and his example and teachings were very deep for all those who came to sit in his presence, which was described as being powerful, and which attracted many followers.

He came to be well-known as the Rifa’i of the Basran marshes, and his tariqa was the only one in the Arab traditions which gained many followers in the Turkish empire.

Ahmad ar-Rifa’i was of the same tradition as al-Junayd, and is shown in salasil as being directly of al-Janayd’s line of spiritual descent. Three of his spiritual descendants founded independent tara’iq, the Badawiyya, the Shadhdhiliyya, and the ‘Alwayinnay.

He, may Allah be pleased with him, was the Qutb at the same time as Sidi ‘Abdu ‘l-Qadir al-Jilani, an unusual blessing from Allah for all the people in that part of the world. -The Children of the Truth, pp.241-244

Selections from chapter nine, The Children of the Truth, pp. 242-247

Muhammad ibn al-‘Arabi al-Ta’I al-Hatimi also known as
Muhyi-id-din ibn al- ‘Arabi (رضي الله عنه)

    Dr. ‘Abd al-Haqq Godlas

Ibn al- ‘Arabi was a great traveller. Perhaps his journeying from place to place in the physical world was but an outward indication of, and necessity for, his rapid, and often dramatic traveling into the Hidden World of his Spirit.

It is said that before he entered the Path of Allah he had studied the deep meaning of all the sciences, and had tasted something of the inner knowledge (al-ma’rifa) from the example and from constant association with many of the Shaykhs and awliya, the Folk as he called them.

He is one of those who opens the locks of Allah’s doors; Glory be to God. -The Children of the Truth, pp. 271, 278

    “All becoming is an imagining,
And in the Truth, also a Reality.
    Who truly understands this
Has attained the secrets of the Way.”

Rabi’a al-Adwiyya (رضي الله عنها ) the first true Saint of Islam, became like a complete nation for Him, and left behind her a deep spiritual heritage, and writings of high quality which were enlivened by an overwhelming Light. She was a leader in the Sufi Path of Islam and a Mistress of its Way in revealing its sources and widening its horizons. And I am alone with You. -Rabi’a

Week Ten: July 5 @ 7-8:30 pm ET

‘Abdu ‘s-Salam ibn Mashish (رضي الله عنه)

    Mohammad Walid Ghoneim, PhD

“O Allah! Make his Spirit the Secret of my Reality
By tasting and by state. And his Reality,
The Unifier of all my worlds,
    In the abodes of knowledge
In this world and in the Next.
And make this true to me
In accordance with what is with You,
By the realization of the First Truth and the Last
And the Revealed and the Hidden.
O first One, there is nothing before You,
O Last One there is nothing after You,
O Revealed One there is nothing above You.
O Hidden One, there is nothing beneath you.”

In order to know the Spirit of our Master Sidi ‘Abdu’s-Salam ibn Mashish, may Allah have mercy upon him, it is necessary for us to look into his Al-Wazifa.

In his Commentary, the Shaykh Muhammad Sa’id al-Jamal ar-Rifa’i, our Master says: The World of Omnipotence is the Presence of the Secrets which manifest the Essence freed of all incidents and choice.

Selections from chapter twelve, The Children of the Truth, pp. 313-336.

Week Eleven: July 12 @ 7-8:30 pm ET

‘Ali ibn ‘Abdullah Abu al-Hasan ash-Shadhuli (رضي الله عنه)

    Murshid Dr. Ibrahim Jaffe M.D., M.D.(H), D.D.

Abu al-Hasan ash-Shadhdhuli (رضي الله عنه) is descended from the Fatimid-Hasanid line on his father’s side, and on his mother’s side from the Fatimid-Husaynid line.

Sidi Abu al-Hasan said, “vision of the Truth came upon me and would not leave me, and it was stronger than I could bear, so I asked Allah, the All-Mighty, to set a veil between me and it. Then a voice called out to me saying, ‘If you besought Him as only His Prophets and Saints and Muhammad His Beloved know how to beseech Him, yet would He not veil you from It. But ask Him to strengthen you for It.’ So I asked for strength, and He strengthened me, Praise be to Allah.”.

Many people who were already following the religion of Islam were seeking something purer, more complete, and at the same time, simpler than what was being taught in the institutions of religious learning. They were also looking for a message which would speak to the hearts of city-dwellers whose everyday life and occupations were an important matter for them. Abu al-Hasan ash-Shadhdhuli’s Teachings gave these people exactly what everybody was looking for. –The Children of the Truth, pp. 337, 343, 346

Selections from chapter thirteen, The Children of the Truth, pp. 337-367.

    Week 12: July 19 @ 7-8:30 pm ET

Ahmad Abu al- ‘Abbas al-Mursi (رضي الله عنه)

    Mary Halima Fleming

Abu al-‘Abbas said: When I traveled to Egypt with the Shaykh Abu al-Hasan ash-Shadhdhuli, I was overtaken on the way by want and hardship. [The Shaykh] said to me, “O Ahmad, Allah created Adam with His Hand, caused His angels to prostrate themselves before him, made him to dwell in the Garden a half day, which is five hundred years, and then sent him down to the Earth.

By Allah, He did not send [Adam] to earth to harm him, but for the sole purpose of perfecting him. And, by Allah, He certainly sent him down before making him a viceregent, for He said: I am about to place a viceregent on the earth. (Q2:30).”

He, may Allah have mercy upon him, used to urge his companions to remember the Name of Allah. He said, “This Name is the Sultan of the names, and It possesses both increment and core. The increment is science and the core is Light, and when Light appears there is revelation and insight.” -The Children of the Truth, pp. 368, 373

Selections from chapter fourteen, The Children of the Truth, pp. 368-385.

FINAL CLASS- Week 13: July 26 @ 7-8:30 pm ET

Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Ata’illah, also referred to as Ibn ‘Ata’illah al-Iskandari (رضي الله عنه)

    Nura Laird, MEd

He was born into an established family with religious affiliations and wll-known for its learning. His grandfather was a holy man who wrote some treatises on religious matters, and was the centre of a group of scholarly companions … who interested themselves in learning and in helping the poor and needy of the city.

Ibn ‘Ata’illah grew up in a time of peace and stability, and when the Sufi Path was accepted by many people as being not only a peripheral aspect of the Religion of Islam but at its very centre. -The Children of the Truth, pp. 386-387

How can it be conceived that something veils Him,
Since He is the One who manifests everything?
How can it be conceived that something veils Him,
Since He is the One Who is manifest through everything?

"This is the Table of Allah for the one who has searched for the real food to know himself and to know his heart and to know his spirit. If he is ready, he can open the door and cross the threshold into the Heart of God. He can sit at the Table and find the real food of love and peace and mercy through the deep knowing. This Table is for all of my beloveds of all backgrounds. I give this food to feed everyone and this food is not from myself, but from God through His beloved prophets without separation. I send forth a call to all people to come and to sit around the Table and be in the World of the Unity. After this, you will carry this path, and in this path there is no separation, no he or she, no male or female — only God" ~Shaykh Sidi Muhammad Said al Jamal ar - Rifa ’ i
